How it all started

by Jennie Siow, Founder & CEO

Legal Mixer was born from a quiet realisation that many young lawyers experience but rarely talk about.

After law school, I started working as a full time paralegal before transitioning into a lawyer. Along the way, I did not realise I was slowly isolating myself from my friends as I became focused on getting to where I am today.

I caught up with some uni friends in law and realised many of them left the profession because they simply did not feel welcome or fit in. For my friends who are still lawyers today, I cannot remember the last time we saw each other.

Professional networking events were everywhere, and I attended countless of them. But I realised the conversations at these events felt superficial. Everyone seemed to be going off a script:

What is your name?
Where do you work?
What is your practice area?
How many years have you been doing this?

Just like every other networking event, I showed up in my most formal wear. I networked. I exchanged business cards. I left feeling like I had met many people, yet connected with no one.

April 2024, in one Networking Event, one young lawyer changed my life.

After another formal event like no other, a junior lawyer reached out to me via LinkedIn and asked if I would be interested to have dinner with her and get to know each other on a social level.

“This was new”, I thought to myself. I agreed.

We had ramen together after work. We spoke about the gaps in formal networking events across all industries and how life as a lawyer can be so isolated.

One crazy idea happened

Our conversations went a little bit like…

Jen: What if I bring 5 random guests to dinner and you bring another 5, and the expectation is for everyone to mingle and get to know each other?

Anon: Let’s do it!

Legal Mixer becomes Australia’s first Daycare Centre for Lawyers

Meet The Team

Founder & CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

Jennie Siow

I’m a Corporate and Commercial Lawyer based in Sydney.

I travelled to Bali, Indonesia just like every other typical Aussie having some much deserved time off (after 7.6hours of billables marathon 5 days a week). As I walked along the streets of Kuta, I stumbled upon a bistro with a slogan “Husband Daycare Centre”. I thought to myself: we should have a daycare centre for lawyers… wait a minute… that could probably work…

I started researching architectural diagrams of a children daycare centre and drafting blueprints based on the inspiration of the various rooms of a daycare centre. Daycare centres generally have an ‘activity room’, ‘reading room’ and ‘rest area’. From there, I turned Legal Mixer from an event organisation to a full-service centre for lawyers to be taken care of in their career lifespan – whether its career support or being part of a supportive community.

Chief Financial Officer | Finance

Kristine Tran

I’m a Family Lawyer based in Sydney with a passion for people, stories, and finding creative ways to connect.

By day, I help families navigate complex family law matters with empathy. Outside the courtroom, I tap into a different kind of energy.

In my free time, I’m a content creator and the Chief Financial Officer behind The Legal Mixer – a space where I help bring creative spirit run free.

It’s more than just a passion project; it’s a platform where law meets lifestyle, ideas meet inspiration, and professionals come together in a relaxed, inclusive environment.

My friends often describe me as a socialite and the life of the party. I thrive on good conversation, great company, and bringing people together. Whether online or in person, I love creating moments that are equal parts fun and meaningful.

At our Mixers, the goal is simple: to bridge gaps, make connections within the legal industry, and build community – all while having a good time.

Strategy Associate | Partnerships & Collaborations

Adin Quach

Hey, I’m Adin and I’m a fourth-year student at UNSW studying Financial Technology and Law.

As someone who has done their fair share of networking, I quickly realised that a lot of my conversations centered around the same two topics: how work was right now and how work would be later.

I joined The Legal Mixer to break out of this cycle and connect with a community that values discussions beyond just work, where people show genuine interest in each other’s perspectives and experiences.

Branding Associate | Content

Anna Lam

My name is Anna, and I’m a Marketing and Media undergraduate from Macquarie University.

Throughout my studies, even within the marketing field, I’ve found it challenging to form deep and meaningful connections that extend beyond just “connecting on LinkedIn”.

That’s why Legal Mixer’s mission resonates with me as it offers legal professionals a chance to foster genuine friendships in a typically formal industry.

Through my role at Legal Mixer, I’m dedicated to expanding its reach within the legal community, helping professionals connect in a way that goes beyond traditional networking and builds lasting, supportive friendships.

Technology Associate | IT

When I’m not diving into code or troubleshooting systems, you can find me exploring the latest tech trends, experimenting with new software, or sharing insights with fellow tech enthusiasts. I believe that every digital challenge is an opportunity to innovate and improve. Let’s create something amazing together!
